직시, 역사와 대면하다 전은 5·18 광주민주화운동 40주기를 맞이하여 지난 5월, 기존 광주 미술계에서 유례없던 미술인들의 협회, 독립예술공간, 기획자와 작가들이 연대한 오월미술제입니다. 의도적 소외와 외면의 역사를 넘어선 세대 간의 장벽을 허무는 오월정신으로 승화한 주제실험전이 지난 5월1일부터 24일까지 진행되었습니다.
1부는 역사적 진실과 재현의 생명력이란 주제로, 기록과 상징 그리고 재현을 통한 사회적 메시지를 담은 작품들로 구성되어 있습니다. 왜곡에 대한 직설과 기억의 환기를 위한 은유, 그리고 진실에 다가서기 위한 예술가의 시선이 주를 이루었습니다.

"Face up to the History”, which marks the 40th anniversary of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising on May 18th, is a May Art Exhibition held by artists' associations, independent art spaces, and curators and artists who were unprecedented in the existing Gwangju art scene are working together to prepare for this exhibition

Part 1 consists of works containing records, symbols, and social messages through reproduction under the theme of “Historical truth and The life force of reproduction” The main focus is on frankness about distortion, a metaphor for the awakening of memory, and a vision for approaching truth.

직시, 역사와 대면하다 전은 5·18 광주민주화운동 40주기를 맞이하여 지난 5월, 기존 광주 미술계에서 유례없던 미술인들의 협회, 독립예술공간, 기획자와 작가들이 연대한 오월미술제입니다. 의도적 소외와 외면의 역사를 넘어선 세대 간의 장벽을 허무는 오월정신으로 승화한 주제실험전이 지난 5월1일부터 24일까지 진행되었습니다.

2부 현재 속에 살아 있는 오월은 동시대 속에서 여전히 비슷한 양상으로 전개되는 사회문제에 대한 비평적 메시지를 담고 있습니다.
특히, 경험자로서 재해석과 경험하지 않은 세대로서의 동시대적 해석, 그리고 자기성찰적 메시지, 문제를 인식할 수 있는 비판적 시각의 중요성을 이야기 하고 있습니다. 또한 정치적 상황이나 저항의 대상 그리고 규제에 따라 다른 양상의 표현과 내러티브가 존재하지만, 비슷한 역사적 배경을 갖고 있는 아시아 국가들 중, 인도네시아와 필리핀 작가의 작품이 초청되었습니다.

“Face up to the History”, which marks the 40th anniversary of the Gwangju Democratic Uprising on May 18th, is a May Art Exhibition held by artists' associations, independent art spaces, and curators and artists who were unprecedented in the existing Gwangju art scene are working together to prepare for this exhibition

Part 3 contains the will of solidarity to heal and move on together by taking care of the wounds, a wish to honor many victims, including unknown patriotic martyrs, and a message about the extension and sublimation of the May Spirit under the theme of “Here Now, Beyond the Boundary.”
